One of the UK’s newest Destroyers is coming to Greenwich later this month, and they are letting people on for tours.

HMS Defender completed her first sea trials in late 2011, and was commissioned during March 2013, so she is just over a year old.

Powered by an innovative high voltage Integrated Electrical Propulsion system, which generates enough power to supply the financial and political centres of London, which could be useful if Holborn catches fire again and cuts off the power to the area.

On 25 and 26 April 2015, HMS Defender will open to the public for free tours.

The ship visit will be strictly for ticket holders only — and you can request a free ticket here.

Visitors will need to enter a security screening area at the Old Royal Naval College before a free boat transfer from Greenwich Pier to the Destroyer.

The visit will last approximately 90 minutes.

Remember, its an operational warship and as such all visitors must be able to move around her without assistance. The ship has steep ladders and hatches, and is therefore unsuitable for those with limited mobility.

Photography will be permitted onboard in certain areas. Your onboard hosts will advise when photos should not be taken.

SUPPORT THIS WEBSITE

This website has been running now for over a decade, and while advertising revenue contributes to funding the website, it doesn't cover the costs. That is why I have set up a facility with DonorBox where you can contribute to the costs of the website and time invested in writing and research for the news articles.

It's very similar to the way The Guardian and many smaller websites are now seeking to generate an income in the face of rising costs and declining advertising.

Whether it's a one-off donation or a regular giver, every additional support goes a long way to covering the running costs of this website, and keeping you regularly topped up doses of Londony news and facts.

If you like what you read on here, then please support the website here.

Thank you

Many thanks for this. The 26th is the London marathon so Greenwich will be very busy on the Sunday.

25th now nearly ‘sold out’, got one early thanks! There is a link to the 26th at the bottom of the 25th event page.

We visited the ship today. For me it’s the crew that make visits like this, they were really happy to answer all the questions we had and to explain the jobs they did onboard.
While waiting to board we were talking with one of the Navy personnel who mentioned that HMS Ocean may be visiting Greenwich soon and to keep an eye out on Eventbrite for tickets.

HMS Ocean visit to Grenwich is confirmed for Sunday 10th May. Tickets now available on Eventbrite.
