A glass elevator has been announced that will take people to the top of one of Battersea Power Station’s chimneys for views across central London.

The chimneys are being rebuilt, as the originals proved to have decayed to a point which made restoration excessively difficult. As part of the works, the developer has announced that one of the chimneys will be turned into a public lift.

It wont hang on the outside, but rush up the inside of the chimney, to then pop out at the top like a meerkat scouting the horizon.

The Chimney Lift, which will be installed in the North-West chimney is expected to open in 2021.

SUPPORT THIS WEBSITE

This website has been running now for over a decade, and while advertising revenue contributes to funding the website, it doesn't cover the costs. That is why I have set up a facility with DonorBox where you can contribute to the costs of the website and time invested in writing and research for the news articles.

It's very similar to the way The Guardian and many smaller websites are now seeking to generate an income in the face of rising costs and declining advertising.

Whether it's a one-off donation or a regular giver, every additional support goes a long way to covering the running costs of this website, and keeping you regularly topped up doses of Londony news and facts.

If you like what you read on here, then please support the website here.

Thank you

So is 2021 the expected opening date of the old power station?

PS I’ve just been in holiday in Albania and I can confirm your site is blocked there.

Not sure how it will work out. Sounds like a bad idea to be fair.
