There’s a chance to go through locked gates into the Beckton gas works next month, as there will be some tours of the former industrial site.

The tours are being organised by the same team that ran the tours of the Bromley-by-Bow Gasworks, and for the same reason, as the site is being considered for redevelopment into housing.

From the Bromley by Bow gasworks tours

Beckton Gasworks opened for use in 1870, and eventually closed in 1969, and has been derelict ever since – save for the occasional film or music video shoot.

The tours are free, and will take place at 11am, 12:15pm and 1:30pm on Saturday 23rd, Monday 25th and Tuesday 26th March 2024.

You can book a place here.

The meeting point is next to Gallions Reach DLR station, and as there aren’t any engineering works affecting the Beckton branch of the DLR on the tour dates, you won’t have a problem getting there.

The consultation for the housing development that’s planned for the site is here.

SUPPORT THIS WEBSITE

This website has been running now for over a decade, and while advertising revenue contributes to funding the website, it doesn't cover the costs. That is why I have set up a facility with DonorBox where you can contribute to the costs of the website and time invested in writing and research for the news articles.

It's very similar to the way The Guardian and many smaller websites are now seeking to generate an income in the face of rising costs and declining advertising.

Whether it's a one-off donation or a regular giver, every additional support goes a long way to covering the running costs of this website, and keeping you regularly topped up doses of Londony news and facts.

If you like what you read on here, then please support the website here.

Thank you
