A large housing development next to a proposed London Overground station has been given the go-ahead by Lewisham council.

The development, New Bermondsey, will see a cluster of residential towers built around the Millwall football ground on former light industrial sites, and will provide some 3,500 homes, a new sports facility, auditorium with 800 seats, and it’s said some 1,250 jobs. The towers vary in height across the site from 13 – 44 storeys; most towers are around 29/30 storeys.
Just over a third of the homes will be classed as affordable.
The planning approval that’s been granted is for Phase 1 of the development – for 600 flats in three towers, with the southeastern tower allocated for 200 affordable homes. The rest of the phases are to be approved later, although the approval is more for detailed designs than for the overall master plan.

The scheme has taken a long route to be approved though, with earlier plans for lower levels of affordable housing being rejected and disputes over the leases for the land around the football stadium.
Although close to South Bermondsey station for trains into London Bridge, the property development also sits right next to a proposed London Overground station, provisionally called Surrey Canal Road, and last December, the council granted planning permission for that to be built, with a requirement that works start by December 2024.
And overlooking, by quite a height the SE London mass incineration plant. Ideal to breathe in from your penthouse balcony………..

Interesting to learn that Millwall FC is to be surrounded by high end residential towers.
Looks like this is going to affect the back of the Trundleys road houses where I live… Great all Daylight Blocked out… Bad enough with the incinerator ….
Trunleys Road is about 150 metres away from the closest tower, so there’s no way that these towers can block all your daylight out.
It says JUST over a 3rd are affordable but affordable for who obviously not the ordinary working man considering this is a working class area.
A fantastic creation of thousands of homes in the area. If you listened to the naysayers, new housing at this scale wouldn’t get built at all, keep it coming.
Interesting to see a station connecting to Canada Water for Jubilee Line and Whitechapel for Crossrail. I usually catch the bus to Surrey Quay or Bermondsey Station or using the South Bermondsey National Rail Station, the new addition of an Overground Station is good news.
