Description

In 1866, Samuel Hodge became the first soldier of African descent to be awarded the Victoria Cross.

A private in the 4th West India Regiment, he was born just after slavery was ended in the Caribbean and served later in West Africa.

This display examines the background to his award and the history of the West India Regiments. Created in partnership with the University of Warwick. Museum of London Docklands
