Taking inspiration from the War Paint exhibition, an expert panel will discuss how art, historically and today, influences public perceptions of the army.
Artists have used the army as a subject for hundreds of years, for numerous reasons. Their works have influenced public opinion about the army - sometimes glorifying battles and romanticising soldiering, or revealing the human suffering and reality of warfare.
In conjunction with our War Paint exhibition, we’re bringing together a panel of experts to discuss how public opinion is shaped by artistic representations of the army and conflict.
Panellists
Victoria Syme-Taylor (chair): Senior Lecturer, Defence Studies Department, King’s College, London
David Cotterell: British artist; Professor of Fine Art, University of Brighton
Gabriel Koureas: Senior Lecturer, Department of History of Art, Birkbeck, University of London
Emma Mawdsley: Curator of War Paint exhibition, National Army Museum
