The Museum of London is moving soon to a new home, in the old Smithfield market buildings, and the winning design for the new building design includes a giant British Library style dome.

The architects, Stanton Williams and Asif Khan were selected to design the new museum at West Smithfield by a competition jury of ten members.

In their statement, they did however somewhat confusingly describe their design as “a building that is permeable on all sides, in the same way as a city square engages with its surroundings. But, in this instance, a covered square – with no front door – an ‘antimuseum’, an arena for public life, performance, installation, debate, with places for rest and reflection.”

There will be a chance to hear from the designers of the antimuseum at a free breakfast event at the Building Centre on Friday 12th August.

Tickets for that lecture are here.

SUPPORT THIS WEBSITE

This website has been running now for over a decade, and while advertising revenue contributes to funding the website, it doesn't cover the costs. That is why I have set up a facility with DonorBox where you can contribute to the costs of the website and time invested in writing and research for the news articles.

It's very similar to the way The Guardian and many smaller websites are now seeking to generate an income in the face of rising costs and declining advertising.

Whether it's a one-off donation or a regular giver, every additional support goes a long way to covering the running costs of this website, and keeping you regularly topped up doses of Londony news and facts.

If you like what you read on here, then please support the website here.

Thank you

This is wonderful news, I speak as a fan of the existing museum on murky London Wall.
