Look to the skies, for one of Britain’s greatest military aircraft is to make a rare fly-past over North London later this month.
The Avro Vulcan was the UK’s cold war bomber and apart from the US spy planes, probably the most distinctive aircraft of its era with its massive delta wing design. From photos you might not unreasonably presume it to be a fighter jet, but it is many times larger.
Fortunately, never used to drop nuclear bombs, the Vulcan bomber was used during the Falklands War to run the famous flight from the UK down to the islands and bomb the airport runway.
The planes were mothballed following the end of the cold war, and while one is still flying, and another might be restored to flight, the rest are in museums.
And that sole flying bomber will be flying over each of those museums, including London’s RAF Museum near Colindale on Sunday 28th June.
The exact time hasn’t been confirmed yet, but it will pop up on air traffic alerts about a week before the flypast — but this is a good time to suggest putting a note in your diaries to be in the area.
The flypast is expected at 2pm over the RAF Museum. A rough route map is here.
A flypast like this is almost a once-in-a-lifetime experience, unless you go to an airshow.

It might well also be the last in a lifetime opportunity to see the Vulcan too. This will likely be it’s final season before it too is mothballed.
One of the joys of living in Bournemouth, is that we get to see it every year at the airshow in August. Well, we do providing it doesn’t break down. Which has happened once or twice.

I saw the Vulcan at the Manston air show once and well remember the mixture of grace as it seemed to glide in and then the roar as it started to climb. It was something between beautiful and horrifying. Thank god it was never used for its intended purpose. I suspect there won’t be much roaring over Colindale.
