Creepy Dr Who-esque exhibition at the Museum of London

A room full of disembodied voices speaking robotically from glowing mouths as antenna-lights flicker with their voices.

This, is actually an art project installation that is probably not meant to be at all creepy, but manages it in spades.

The display, VoiceOver Finsbury Park is actually a project created to bring a community together: a hyper-local social radio, installed in a tower block attached to Finsbury Park.

A series of light antennae, LED nodes and radio boxes, operated by residents, were installed in homes and public spaces. The aim of the project was to give neighbours who may never have spoken to each other a reason to chat and share ideas.

The audio transcripts have now been divorced from their human creators and put into a room with snippets played as you walk around.

Unfortunately, what’s been created is some sort of dystopian cyber future were people trapped in white boxes can only talk in short bursts with a flash of light from their antennas. A disembodied white radio with a glowing mouth is their only form of communication.

If they were on wheels and moved around the room the Dr Who analogy would be perfect.

This rather peculiar display is at the Museum of London until 15th April – in the room that usually stores the Lord Mayor’s carriage.
