Dr Charles Goodson-Wickes discusses King George V's trip to the battlefields of northern Europe to visit the war graves of the fallen.
In 1922, King George V visited the graves of First World War soldiers buried in France and Belgium in a trip documented by Australian journalist and soldier Sir Frank Fox. Despite its lack of fanfare, the British monarch's visit to the war cemeteries was an important moment in the history of First World War commemoration.
In his illustrated talk, Dr Goodson-Wickes will explore the visit, which took place at a time when the cemeteries and memorials were still being built and the landscape looked raw and ragged after four years of death and destruction.
There will be a book sale and signing after the talk.
