Dr Kathryn Harkup returns for the launch of her wonderful book Making the Monster: The Science Behind Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. During the evening Dr Harkup will give an illustrated lecture and short reading from her new book focusing on the difficulties of transplanting a heart into such a creature, and regaling us with tales of heart transplants and experiments gone awry.
The book will be available to purchase, and Kathryn will sign them for you…or for your sweetheart, if you choose to purchase it as a Valentine’s gift. And as always, the museum's specimens will be on display - particularly the hearts - to make this a truly educational and engaging experience.
‘Making the Monster’ explores the science behind Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Is there any science fact behind the science fiction? And how might a real-life Victor Frankenstein have gone about creating his monster? The century before its publication saw huge advances in our understanding of science, particularly electricity and physiology.
Sensational science demonstrations caught the imagination of the general public, and newspapers were full of lurid tales of murderers and resurrectionists. From stories of artificial life and experimental surgery, to 'monsters' and electrical experiments on human cadavers, Kathryn Harkup examines the science and scientists that influenced Shelley and inspired her most famous creation.
