Science Museum Lates - Conflict, Casualties and Care

This event has finished Took place on: Wednesday, 26th Jul 2017

 Free

In July 1917 Allied troops launched the Passchendaele offensive against the German empire, and although it ultimately failed, it changed the course of emergency medicine.

To mark the centenary of this momentous military campaign this month, Lates will examine the impact of conflict on science and society, and how medical lessons learnt on the First World War battlefields still carry relevance today.

Visitors to Lates can explore how battles like Passchendaele catalysed the development of emergency medicine and even sophisticated modern treatments such as chemotherapy.

Hear from the experts about responding to modern humanitarian crises, the role of war in disability rights, and the psychological wounds of warfare, and get the chance to learn some simple life-saving skills and meet the unspoken animal heroes of warzones.

All this and much more, including comedy with a difference at Large Stand Up Collider, our pop-up talk show Talkaoke, and our famous intergalactic silent disco. Plus, we’ll be screening Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster Dunkirk in 15/70mm IMAX, the award-winning
director’s favourite format.
