Historian James Evans asks why the English emigrated in vast numbers to modern Canada and the USA. In commemoration of Canada’s anniversary, he looks in particular at those who sailed during the late 16th and 17th centuries to what became Canada. Why did the English emigrate in such numbers, making Canada, like the US, a place dominated by English language and culture?
James Evans is a historian and television producer. After a first in history at Oxford University he completed doctoral studies there. His thesis on the national question in the new state of Yugoslavia after World War I was published as a book in 2005. He has worked since producing historical documentaries and helping to write the accompanying books. Emigrants is his second book for a wider readership. He lives in London with his wife and three young children.
Enjoy food and drink purchased from the Knowledge Centre Bar from 18.00 and after the event until the Bar closes at 22.00.
