Is the book the most powerful object of our time? How have we moved from marks on clay tablets and papyrus scrolls to hardcovers and paperbacks? Join Keith Houston for this illustrated talk on the history of the book: a story of civilisations, empires, human ingenuity and madness.
The book is arguably the most important of information technologies. As both an object and an idea, it defines the way we live. This talk follows the development of writing, printing, the art of illustrations, and binding to show the development of the book into the object we recognise today.
Keith Houston is the author of Shady Characters and the founder of shadycharacters.co.uk, both of which are celebrations of the history of typography. More recently he has published The Book, a history of the paper, ink, thread, glue, and board from which a book is made; a story as rich as the words on its pages.
Enjoy food and drink purchased from the Knowledge Centre Bar from 18.00 and after the event until the Bar closes at 22.00.
