'The Right Kind of Daylight' by Pavlina Akritas from Arup

This event has finished Took place on: Wednesday, 29th Mar 2017

 Free

The talk will examine the design considerations and challenges of the introduction of daylight into museums, identifying the systems that are appropriate for each gallery space and paying particular attention to the geographic location of the buildings but also the requirements of the client, the end users and the facilities manager.

Active and passive control systems will be considered together with blackout options when the galleries are closed and supplementation at times of restricted daylight. In addition, this presentation will discuss the current trends of museum architecture, and the range of tools that designers use to control daylight admission: the shading layer, the glass, the volume control layer and the redirection layer.

Schemes installed in three different countries will be described and analysed, including the Broad Museum in Los Angeles, which was recently awarded the ‘Daylight Project of the Year’ at the Lighting Design Awards.
