London is Moving: Public Transport Cabaret

This event has finished Took place on: Wednesday, 9th Dec 2015

 Free

On this night it will be exactly 10 years since the last Routemaster bus slid into the omnibus Valhalla that is Brixton garage. Tonight Londonist celebrates and commiserates with a night of public-transport comedy and spoken-word with writers Travis Elborough and Scott Wood and Londonist’s very own transport maniac Geoff Marshall. Learn the secrets of the London Underground, strange tales from the tube and the cultural history of the boss of buses: the Routemaster!

Travis Elbourough: Routemaster: The Bus We Loved

Travis Elbourough, author of The Bus We Loved joins us to celebrate one of London's mostenduring symbols: the Routemaster bus. Travis will present a cultural tour of the Routemaster's life and times. Taking in everything from the Festival of Britain, Douglas Scott, Flanders and Swann and Cliff Richard to the Eagle comic, Sam Selvon, Alfie and On the Buses, he explores how this humble bus became one the capital's most cherished global icons.

Travis has been a freelance writer, author, and cultural commentator for more than a decade. His books include The Bus We Loved: London’s Affair with the Routemaster, Wish You Were Here: England on Sea and London Bridge in America.

Geoff Marshall: Tubespotting

Does Geoff have an unhealthy obsession with the London Tube? He'd admit that he does ... but please don’t call him a train spotter and he doesn't actually like trains - but he does love the history, architecture, and secrets about the London's iconic transport system that everyone can related to because we all have a story about. Geoff's taken it to a higher level though with over a decade of Tube Challenge - and struggles to accept the accolade for twice being the World Record Holder for travelling to all the stations in the fastest time possible.

Geoff got to know the system like the back of his hand, and will share (almost) everything he knows about the system. Facts, trivia, quirks, you name it .. if it's to do with the Tube, Geoff will know about it

Scott Wood: Urban Legends of the London Underground

The bowels of London’s Underground system writhes with folklore. Just as fairy tales warn of the dangers of going in to the woods alone London’s urban legends are often horror stories about going alone down in to the London underground. Scott, author of London Urban Legends: The Corpse on the Tube, Londonist writer and host of the London Fortean Society faces the helpful terrorist, sniffs out London’s plague pits and dissects the story of the corpse on the tube.
