You have just a few weeks to visit the Design Museum in its current home next to the Thames before it closes to move to a new home in Kensington.
The Design Museum’s current site in Bermondsey, a former banana warehouse will close to the public on 30 June 2016, and the new site in Kensington will be opening on 24 November 2016.
Its final event will be Weekend Punk, a two-day celebration of the influence and legacy of punk design, which is part of the year-long HLF-supported Punk London festival.
The Design Museum’s first exhibition in its new Kensington home – curated by Justin McGuirk – will be ‘Fear and Love: Reactions to a Complex World’.
The new home, which is the former Commonwealth Institute building will increase the museum’s size threefold.
The new museum also boasts a double-height basement which was excavated underneath the existing building — before the local council cooled on the big basements being dug under buildings.
At the moment, you have to pay to visit the museum, but the new venue will be free to visit — as with all the other major museums in the UK — with only temporary exhibitions being charged for.
It’s expected that the larger building, the location in Kensington, and the free entry will see visitor numbers rise by 400,000 per year to around 650,000.
