Description

Cartoon and comic art had an important part to play during this dark period. Cartoons brought life to the endless black and white newsreels, posters, newspapers and books produced at the time. For the cartoonist, the subject matter of war - the enemies and the heroes; the hope, the loss and the glory; and the technology - was ripe for comic and satirical portrayal.

The exhibition will include political and joke cartoons, comic postcards and cigarette cards, trench publications by serving soldiers, books, comics and other material by a wide range of professional and amateur artists giving an insight into both official and personal responses to the war. It will include work by Bruce Bairnsfather, W.K. Haselden, William Heath Robinson, H.M. Bateman, Bernard Partridge, Donald McGill, George 'Sidney' Strube and many others.
