SAVE Walking Tour of Walthamstow

This event has finished Took place on: Saturday, 29th Feb 2020

 £15

Join SAVE Britain's Heritage for a walking tour of Walthamstow with Mike Fox, Conservation Officer at London Borough of Waltham Forest and former deputy director of SAVE. During the tour we will take in the historic fabric of this suburban London Borough as it continues its ascent as one of the most sought-after places to live in outer London.

Starting at Walthamstow Central Station the tour will step away from the present town centre and head for the historic core of Walthamstow Village, with its collection of listed buildings including the Ancient House and the Medieval parish church of St Mary. Along the way we'll take in the restored shopfronts of Orford Road and the associated Mini-Holland cycle path improvements, the Georgian Orford House, and the Victorian Old Town Hall. Subject to gaining access we'll have time to take a look inside the church too.

From the Village the walk will continue to Waltham Forest Town Hall for a tour of the magnificent late 1930s building, both inside and out (subject to access due to ongoing repair and restoration works which are currently taking place). Please note the walk from the Village to the Town Hall contains one steep hill, but we will be travelling down it, not up.

After the Town Hall, we will head to the William Morris Gallery and Lloyd Park, before returning back towards Walthamstow Central, with a final stop to look at the former EMD Cinema, Grade II* listed and one of the finest examples in the country. The cinema is on the At Risk Register, but has recently been acquired by the Council, who are well advanced with plans to restore it and convert it into a new venue for Soho Theatre.
