The great Croat artist Ivan Mestrovic (1883-1962) is widely regarded as one of the great sculptors of the 20th century. Much of his work is in the former Yugoslavia, which he was forced to leave in 1943.
Early training in Vienna filled him with Symbolist dreams; later exposure to Michelangelo and Aristide Maillol took his art in new directions. Mestrovic was very interested in the interplay between architecture and sculpture as well.
MMT trustees Stamp and Bowdler are fervent admirers of his work, and recently wrote an article on this topic for the The Public Monuments and Sculpture Associations's, Sculpture Journal. The talk will range from war memorials to the most intimate of family burial places, and reveal some work of great power and poignant beauty.
