The vast Gothic Cathedral that saw the Reformation of the 16th century was to meet its end in the Great Fire of 1666. The new Cathedral which we know today became the first post-Reformation Cathedral built in England and bears many of the architectural and design hallmarks of this new era.
To mark the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, special late openings will be held on two evenings in October.
- Hear about the Reformation in words and music in the Cathedral's quire, led by St Paul's clergy and musicians.
- See a rare copy of William Tyndale's New Testament - the 'most dangerous' book in Tudor England - on display for the first time ever
- Sketch some of Wren's exquisite Reformation architecture - pencils and paper provided
- Photograph the interior of one of the world's most famous churches
- See Sir James Thornhill's muted post-Reformation dome paintings from the Whispering Gallery
- See a display of mosaics - 'Radicals and Reformers' - made by students of the South Bank School of Mosaic will be on display, accompanied by new poetry from young poets.
For these special evenings, as well as allowing photography we will be actively encouraging people to sketch some of the Cathedral's details. Pencils and paper will be available on the evening - but of course you can bring your own. There will also be the opportunity to have your sketches photographed and featured on the Cathedral's digital channels.
