Next year, the City of London is planning a range of events, based around notable anniversaries in the “building of London”.
It will explore City and London achievements (and disasters) across engineering, architecture and invention and is borne of a number of events and anniversaries occurring during 2019.
These include:
- 150th anniversary of opening of Blackfriars Bridge and Holborn Viaduct (1869)
- 200th anniversary of birth of Joseph Bazalgette (civil engineer and designer of London’s sewers)
- 200th anniversary of birth of Horace Jones (architect and designer of Old Billingsgate, Smithfield and Leadenhall Markets, the monument at Temple Bar and Tower Bridge [in collaboration with engineer John Wolfe Barry])
- Opening of the central section of Crossrail
- Opening launch of Illuminated River (phase one) – all City bridges
- 125th anniversary of Tower Bridge (completed 1894)
Ahead of next year’s events, the City of London is calling for artists to submit proposals for works that can be displayed around the City in 2019 to support the history of the buildings.

For the rest of us, 2019 looks like it could be a good one for heritage and architecture.
London will still be competing with cities worldwide with more skyscrapers being built including Singapore, New York City, Tokyo, Paris, Berlin, Moscow, Melbourne, Sydney, Washington DC, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Manchester, Belfast and many more cities will be competing.
