It doesn’t happen very often, and usually just for special events, but the Victorian Pathology Museum at St Barts Hospital is having an open day.
The museum is not normally open to the public in a drop-in manner as it is a university teaching facility in use by medical students. It is open some evening for paid events, but they’re now having a drop-in open day.
Sadly, it’s a Thursday — and the afternoon only, but if you’ve ever wanted to see inside one of London’s more curious buildings, this is a rare chance to just wander around.
There will also be a chance to view the specimens on the ground floor at your leisure — the upper levels contain items that are restricted due to the Human Tissue Act and are off-limits.
The museum open day is also a chance to see the conservation of the collection occurring, as it does on a day-to-day basis, when the space isn’t being used for teaching and exams.
In addition to the pathology collection, there is an art exhibition on the walls of the museum which can be viewed during the afternoon. ‘Beautiful Corpse’ by Mia-Jane Harris is a series of ethereal photographs of human remains in the form of wet specimens
