Description
This new exhibition at Hogarth's House will look at the history of brewing in Chiswick, from Hogarth's time, when there were two breweries - the Griffin and the Lamb - side by side, to the present. Hogarth's famous print of Beer Street provides the starting point, a reminder of beer's role as a healthy everyday drink before clean piped water was available to all.
Brewing equipment, barrels, malt and hop samples, coopers' tools and old advertising images have been generously provided by Fullers to enhance the exhibition. New research has identified the range of characters involved in the two breweries - including wealthy businessmen, a bishop and a lawyer, a bankrupt and an embezzler, as well as the skilled brewers and their hard-working colleagues who made the beer, delivered it and kept these concerns going for 350 years.
