1314 and all that: What was going on at the Battle of Bannockburn

This event has finished Took place on: Thursday, 19th Jun 2014

 Free

This talk marks the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn, 24 June 1314, when the Scots under Robert I (often called 'Robert the Bruce') defeated the English invasion led by Edward II. The begins by explaining how and why the cream of English knighthood came to be crushed by a force of Scottish plebs. Next, it demonstrates the battle's huge importance in the history of medieval warfare, and even greater significance for medieval Britain's political history. And finally, it examines the long-term Scottish dimension: Bannockburn was as much a part of Scottish civil war as of Anglo-Scottish conflict.
