Description

Ethical taxidermist Jazmine Miles-Long challenges ideas and perceptions of this art and craft.

Inspired by pieces selected from the Horniman's historic collection, Jazmine pays tribute to the unknown craftsmen of the past to produce a series of painstakingly beautiful works that explore the journey from the taxidermist to museum.

Presented alongside their inspiration, each of Jazmine’s pieces mirrors and responds to its historic counterpart: the positioning of a specimen to fit a case, the placement of flora, tape and labels added over time.

Creating every element of her work - the taxidermy, the background ‘flora’ made of porcelain, and the cases - Jazmine demonstrates how a taxidermist was, and is, not only a preserver of animals but a master of many skills.
