Description

‘Lost & Found: Mapping European Literary London’ is a small but expansive research-led display on UCL’s Bloomsbury campus exploring the body of literature about London by European writers who have flocked to the capital across the centuries. Through a physical map of London, spanning the length of the university’s South Cloisters, the display traces the encounters of Europe’s authors, artists and intellectuals with the city, uncovering the mark London leaves on the writer and their work – and often, vice versa.

Drawing on an interactive digital map of London developed by UCL European Institute, the Faculty of Arts and Humanities and the Bartlett Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis, with contributions from across the UCL community, ‘Lost & Found’ combines old and new literary perspectives of the capital, revealing a Europe and a London of the imagination. The display features the writings of Hans Christian Andersen, Giacomo Casanova, Joseph Conrad, Ananda Devi, Simonetta Agnello Hornby and many others, all displayed in their original languages and in translation, with over 15 European languages on show.

‘Lost & Found’ gives you the opportunity to explore London through the eyes of European writers through the ages, and reflect on the city as a place where journeys intersect; where people and cultures meet and are transformed.

Whilst on the UCL Bloomsbury campus, don’t miss the chance to see the university’s other exhibitions and displays or to visit UCL’s museums, all within a couple of minutes’ walk of each other!
