Exhibition: Empire Builders: 1750 - 1950

From the middle of the 18th century until the dissolution of the British Empire after the second world war, British architects and builders found many opportunities to work abroad in a variety of scales and styles. As the sphere of British influence expanded in the 19th and early 20th Century a growing number of buildings were required for all manner of uses - government, religion, education and pleasure as well as housing.

Through drawings, watercolours, photographs and models from the RIBA’s unique collections, this exhibition examines where, why and how British architects built internationally, both inside and outside the Empire.

Showcasing built and unbuilt projects, it looks the many faces of British architecture around the world.
