Description

As the country prepares to vote in the General Election in May, this exhibition looks at many of the people involved in the women’s suffrage movement from the late 19th century until votes for women were achieved.

Jewish women were heavily involved in the fight to gain electoral representation in their communities and wider British society.

From awareness-raising tea parties and plays, to more militant actions such as hunger-strikes and the disruption of a Yom Kippur service in 1913, they played a significant role in the suffrage movement.

Objects on display include Gertrude Lowy’s hunger strike medal and Henrietta Lowy’s ‘Votes for Women’ badge, as well as diaries, fliers and posters from the suffrage movement.
