Leadership has always been a critical component of the British Army’s success. From campaign-level decisions on troop deployments and lines of engagement to instinctive choices made by those on the ground, leadership qualities are vital for all who serve.

Come and learn about the importance of leadership during the First World War and the impact of key decisions in defining the course of events. Then, see how your own skills, knowledge and determination could have shaped the conflict.

Can You Win the Great War?

7.30pm - 8.30pm

Hear from historians Spencer Jones and John Buckley as they discuss their latest book, ‘Armchair Generals: World War One’. They will analyse the key moments of the conflict and explore how changes in leadership, decision-making and luck could have affected many aspects of the war.
Marshalling the Troops

6.00pm - 6.30pm | 7.00pm - 7.30pm | 8.30pm - 9.00pm

Put your military strategy skills to the test as you take on the role of battle commander in a series of conflict situations. You will be assessed on your skills as a commander and graded on your efficiency.
Weapons of War

5.00pm - 9.00pm

Get hands-on with some of the equipment and weaponry used by the British Army. Museum experts will show off items from the collection and highlight how they were vital at many of the key moments in the Army’s history. From mortar rounds and tunics to machine guns and body armour, discover the importance of kit and equipment for soldiers and their commanders.

See some of the papers, maps, letters and orders used by those who have served as we offer a special deep dive into the Museum’s archive.
Leadership Gallery Tour

Every 20 minutes, from 5.30pm until 7.30pm

Join us for a guided tour of the Museum’s galleries, focusing on leaders who have shaped the Army’s history. From Oliver Cromwell to Bill Slim, the tour will offer a glimpse into the lives of these leaders and the roles they played.
