Statues and Monuments of the West End: A walk led by Steven Brindle

This guided walk will take in a selection of the wealth of public statues and monuments in London’s West End.

Starting at the Wellington Arch (Decimus Burton, 1825), with the nearby Great War memorials, and proceeding by way of the Victoria Memorial (Thomas Brock, 1901-11), and monuments including Alfred Gilbert’s memorial to Queen Alexandra (1926-32) and Sir Bertram MacKennal’s memorial to Edward VII (1921), via Horse Guards Parade, to end at the Cenotaph on Whitehall. (Edwin Lutyens, 1919-20).

The starting-point is adjacent to Hyde Park Corner station on the Piccadilly line, and we will end for a drink at the Red Lion PH on Whitehall, around the corner from Westminster station.

Dr Steven Brindle, the tour leader, is a historian at English Heritage who has published widely on the history of architecture and engineering: he is long-standing supporter of the Victorian Society and has organised many events.

The nearest Underground stations is Hyde Park Corner station on the Piccadilly line.
