Leighton Rediscovered: From Flaming June to new treaures

Frederic, Lord Leighton’s Flaming June now resides in the Museo de Arte de Ponce in Puerto Rico. How this and other masterpieces arrived in the Caribbean is truly an extraordinary story, not only of a single collection but also of Victorian art in the 20th century.

After its glittering debut at the Royal Academy in 1895, Flaming June disappeared from view, only to be rediscovered 60 years later, in a house which was being demolished, and sold for only £50. In the following years, as Victorian paintings, drawings and sculptures re-entered the London art market, Luis A. Ferré, the Governor of Puerto Rico, acquired Leighton’s masterpiece, to be housed in his new museum, designed by MoMA architect Edward Durrell Stone. Today, Flaming June is known as ‘The Mona Lisa of the Southern Hemisphere.’
