SYNOPSIS
The tragedy caused by the Grenfell Tower fire brought huge attention from the construction industry to re-consider more stringent regulations and design codes in fire safety design. It also makes it imperative for a structural engineer to be fully aware of the basic knowledge and design codes in fire safety design, especially the methodology for structural fire design using simple general-purpose finite element programs such as Abaqus or ANSYS.
In this talk, Dr Feng Fu will give a detailed discussion on the reasons which caused the fire spread so fast in the Grenfell Tower disaster. The compartmentation, evacuation route designed in the old tower blocks as the Grenfell Tower will be re-examined. In the meantime, the basic knowledge for structural fire design and correspondent design guidelines will be introduced. The modelling technique for fire analysis such as CFD, Zone model and Finite Element analysis will be explained, pertinent software such as OZONE, Abaqus and ANSYS will be introduced. In this talk, Dr Feng Fu will also introduce some latest fire safety design strategy used in the new project such as Burj Khalifa.
SPEAKER
Dr. Feng Fu ‎PhD MBA CEng MIStructE MICE MASCE FHEA
Dr Fu is a Chartered structural engineer, a committee member of Disproportionate Collapse Mitigation of Building Structure Standards and committee member of Blast Protection of Building Standard, American Society of Civil Engineers. He is also an Editorial board member, Proceedings of Institutions of Civil Engineers, Structures and Buildings. He is currently the Vice Chair of IStructE, North Thames branch. When he was working in the WSP group, he involved in the structural fire design and analysis for the tallest building in Western Europe the Shard. His paper with the title “Grenfell Tower disaster: how did the fire spread so quickly?” which is first published in “The Conversation” hours after the disaster happened, then re-reported by BBC Australia website, magazine“New Scientist” website and the other 10 websites, has attracted about 200,000 reads worldwide. He was also consulted by CTV News Channel (Canada); and interviewed by Newspaper ARA, Spain; Radio station, Voice of Islam regarding the fire safety design and the causes of the fire in Grenfell Tower. This paper gave in depth explanation for the reason of the disaster and pertinent fire safety design knowledge to the ordinary readers across the world. He is also the author of three popular text books for the civil engineers’ society, which covers a broad range of the design issues and topics. They are:
