Assessing the implications for journalism and political culture in the US and the UK, the journalist and commentator asks why this has become the era of post-truth, how much Donald Trump is to blame, the danger this poses to democracy – and what can be done about it.

Jonathan Freedland is a journalist and author. He is a regular contributor to The Guardian, The Jewish Chronicle, The New York Times and The New York Review of Books. He also presents BBC Radio 4's contemporary history series, The Long View.
