Death: A Self-portrait

This exhibition runs from Thu, 15th Nov 2012 to Sun, 24th Feb 2013

This event has finished Took place on: Wednesday, 23rd Jan 2013

A major winter exhibition showcases some 300 works from a unique collection devoted to the iconography of death and our complex and contradictory attitudes towards it.

Assembled by Richard Harris, a former antique print dealer based in Chicago, the collection is spectacularly diverse, including art works, historical artefacts, scientific specimens and ephemera from across the world. Rare prints by Rembrandt, Dürer and Goya will be displayed alongside anatomical drawings, war art and antique metamorphic postcards; human remains will be juxtaposed with Renaissance vanitas paintings and twentieth century installations celebrating Mexico’s Day of the Dead.

From a group of ancient Incan skulls, to a spectacular chandelier madeof 3000 plaster-cast bones by British artist Jodie Carey, this singular collection, by turns disturbing, macabre and moving, opens a window upon our enduring desire to make peace with death.

April 1st is the traditional day for hoaxing and japes, but deception and deceit riddle everyday news and communication. From hoax hip-hop stars and haunted housesto military deception, fake news, cancer myths and a joke that could have started World War III, join the London Fortean Society and Conway Hall Ethical Society for an April Fool’s Day of hoaxing, deceit and unreal things. Some may be charming, others are terrifying.

Famous for its gentlemen’s clubs which were originally coffee and chocolate houses St James’s also houses one of the oldest and most expensive restaurants in town and Britain’s oldest wine and spirit merchant not to mention the Queen’s grocery store and a 200 year old cheese shop. You will hear about the Jamie Oliver of the 19th Century, the cook that inspired the TV series the Duchess of Duke Street and (not food related!) a notorious brothel keeper who featured in Hogarth's The Harlot's Progress. We will also see the hotel bar which (it is said) inspired Ian Fleming's choice of drink for his famous spy plus another hidden hotel bar built over extensive tunnels. The walk will finish at a rare local-feel pub tucked away in a passage close to St James's Palace.
