Engineering dark matter, CERN's Large Hadron Collider

This event has finished Took place on: Thursday, 2nd Aug 2018

 £12

An evening exploring one of the world’s most ambitious scientific and engineering projects – CERN’s Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

The Large Hadron Collider is the world’s highest energy particle accelerator, recreating conditions similar to those just one millionth of a millionth of a second after the Big Bang. Huge detectors surround collision points, housed in a 27km long tunnel with experimental chambers 100 metres underground, to record how matter behaves in extreme conditions to help explain why the universe is like it is today.

The construction process took 20 years and required advanced expertise and unparalleled problem-solving to overcome the engineering challenges of the ambitious project.

Speakers will introduce the work of CERN and the experiments undertaken by LHC. The event will delve into CERNS construction and engineering projects, including the proposal for a 100km circular collider.

Speakers:

– Dr Sarah Malik, Royal Society University Research Fellow at Imperial College London. Her current research involves searching for dark matter at the Large Hadron Collider experiment at CERN.

– John Osborne, senior civil engineer at CERN

Chair: Vanessa Norwood, creative director, The Building Centre

See the speaker profiles for more information on their work and presentations.

Registration will be from 6.00pm and the event will start at 6.30pm. Presentations will be followed by an audience Q&A.
