Wit weaves in and out of fashion, and our own age prizes it in social and broadcast media. But its role in modern fiction is less clear. Do we need it more than ever, or is it a mere distraction from the truly serious? Rachel Cooke is an award-winning journalist and author of Her Brilliant Career: Ten Extraordinary Women of the Fifties. A.L. Kennedy is a writer and performer of drama and stand-up comedy; she has twice been selected as one of Granta's Best of Young British Novelists and has won a host of other awards. Sam Leith is the Literary Editor of the Spectator, a regular newspaper contributor, and an author of non-fiction and fiction.
