Description
This exhibition investigates the unexpected journey which fulfilled a lifelong fantasy of Sigmund Freud, but which left him perplexed.
Tracing Freud on the Acropolis will explore Freud’s visit to the ancient Greek citadel, which had occupied his thoughts since childhood, and the confusing feelings it caused at the time and for many years after.
Tracing Freud on the Acropolis will bring together archives, images and objects exploring Freud’s journey to Greece, his encounter with the Acropolis and his lifelong interest in Greece.
It includes objects from Freud’s collection, including historical artefacts which sat in his eyeline on the desk and in self-curated cabinets in his study, travel correspondence, manuscripts, books from Freud’s library, archival material and seminal photographs documenting the Acropolis in the early 20th century.
