Description

Explore a magical world of fairy tales, as seen through the eyes of two iconic illustrators.

From the charming Puss in Boots to the artful Prince Ricky, fairy tale stories have captured the imaginations of children and adults alike for centuries. While best known for his inventive contraption drawings, William Heath Robinson was also a prominent book illustrator, and illustrated many fairy tale collections.

This exhibition displays some of his finest drawings for fairy tales by Charles Perrault and Hans Christian Andersen.

Alongside W. H. Robinson’s work, see illustrations by Michael Foreman, one of Britain’s best loved illustrators of children’s books. In contrast to Heath Robinson’s delicate linework, Foreman employs vivid water colour imagery to interpret the works of Perrault and Andersen. The drama, humour, adventure and utter timelessness of these classic stories is evident in the work of these two fantastic illustrators, with their work spanning over a century.

Meet formidable pirates, talking sparrows, cheeky elves and many more magical characters in this special exhibition.
