Discover more about the important architects who have contributed to the urban architecture of the square mile.
This walk, led by Caroline Powell, will introduce visitors to the roles of many important architects, including Christopher Wren and his glorious use of English baroque decoration and Portland stone to create Temple Bar, St Paul’s Cathedral and many City of London churches. The walk will provide a very special opportunity to go inside Temple Bar itself, admiring its glorious decorations and having the opportunity to stand in the footsteps of Wren. Other architects to be included will be George Dance the Younger, and his Hindou Gothick facade on Guildhall; George Dance the Elder and Mansion House , and John Soane‘s perimeter wall of the Bank of England. Walkers will be introduced to some of the ‘starchitects ’ of the eastern cluster, including REM Koolhaas (Rothschild’s), Rogers Stirk Harbour (Lloyds and the Cheesegrater) and Foster + Partners (the Gherkin).
