Nunhead Cemetery heritage open weekend

Visit the 52 acres of Nunhead's Victorian Cemetery - access the chapel and crypt (normally closed) by taking one of the free conducted visits.

There will also be tours of the whole cemetery. Refreshments will be available.

Cemetery tours: 1400 & 1500.

Crypt visits 1330, 1415, 1500 & 1545

Max 25 people per tour/session. Crypt visits last about 20 minutes. Cemetery tours take 1 hr 30 minutes

Nunhead Cemetery is one of the largest and most attractive of London's 'Magnificent Seven' Victorian Cemeteries. During the Heritage Open Days, the Friends of Nunhead Cemetery (FONC) will be conducting tours of its ruined Anglican chapel and crypt as well as the cemetery as a whole. The cemetery is of outstanding historic and ecological importance. It is Grade II* Historic Landscape, a Conservation Area and a Local Nature reserve. Stroll a few yards away from the Main Avenue along any of the curving paths into woodland away from the bustle and sounds of the city. There, among the trees, visitors will find the story of the nineteenth century written in stone. Nunhead Cemetery, a hidden green oasis set on a hillside, is full of surprises such as the view of the dome of St Paul's and carved angels peering through the ivy. But undoubtedly the greatest surprise is the sense of tranquillity. Where else in London can fifty two acres of peace and quiet reflection be found? Nunhead may be a cemetery but it is one where nature gives it new life during each passing season.
