A social history of seamstresses, dressmakers and tailors. Adele Emm describes the lives and jobs of people who worked in the clothing trade.

Many of us have dressmakers and tailors on our family trees. Adele explains how remuneration and working conditions were often appalling. 'Slop shops' or sweat shops were in existence since at least Samuel Pepys' time.

Adele uses contemporary sources to uncover the lives of these workers. She tells us what they did on a daily basis, their working hours and their working conditions. She also describes the impact on them of the sewing machine.
