Inspired by the Roman Dead exhibition, join us in this talk about the traditions and rites surrounding death during Roman times. The panel will discuss funerary rituals, beliefs and burial practices in London 2,000 years ago, followed by a Q&A.
With Dr. John Pearce, Senior Lecture in Archaeology at King’s College London and an expert on Roman funerals, cemeteries and death with special focus on Roman Britain; Dr. Valerie Hope, Senior Lecturer and Head of Classical Studies at the Open University, with research focusing on mourning and grief in Roman times; and Professor Tim Thompson, Professor of Applied Biological Anthropology and Associate Dean (Learning & Teaching) at the School of Science, Engineering and Design, Teesside University, with key areas of work on cremation processes and forensics. The talk will be chaired by Dr. Rebecca Redfern, Curator of Human Osteology at the Museum of London.
This talk will be followed by an hour to explore the Roman Dead exhibition.
