Letters and the Lamp: Sir Humphry Davy, 1778-1829

This event has finished Took place on: Wednesday, 5th Apr 2017

 Free

In 1815, just over two hundred years ago, Sir Humphry Davy invented a miners' safety lamp that would revolutionise industry in Britain, Europe, and beyond.

The safety lamp was a source of controversy, however: others laid claim to having invented it, and a bitter public dispute ensued.

In this talk, Professor Sharon Ruston (Lancaster University) will explore some of Davy's private letters, the majority of which will be published for the very first time in 2018.

After the talk there will be tea and coffee, and a more informal workshop, run by Dr Andrew Lacey (Lancaster University), to discuss some of the issues raised in Davy's letters.
