Join us to celebrate the publication of 'The Age of Noise in Britain: Hearing Modernity' by James G. Mansell.
The early twentieth century was often described by those who lived through it as the ‘age of noise’. When it came to articulating their unease about living in a constantly changing world, people chose to point to what they could hear: ‘the rushing, banging, grinding, shrieking, hooting, rattling, and general thundering’ as one commentator described it in 1932. The Age of Noise in Britain considers what it meant to ‘hear modernity’ in Britain in the period 1914-1945, an age of new communications and media technologies, of ever more thunderous urban sounds, and of mechanized warfare.
At 4.30pm the author will give a talk followed by Q&A as part of the Science Museum Research Seminar.
At 5.30pm there will be a launch reception in the Dana Library accompanied by sounds from early twentieth-century Britain. There will be an opportunity to purchase copies of the book at a discounted rate. Attendees are welcome at the reception without having attended the earlier seminar.
