From Protest to Patrol: aspects of policing by women in southern England 1914 to 2016

A brief overview of the changing and diverse nature of women policing over 102 years. Dr Williams has researched some of the southern forces in depth and his articles on various regional police forces reveal new material.

Historian Dr Clifford Williams has published many books and articles on police history. In 2016 his book 'A history of women policing Hampshire and the Isle of Wight 1915-2016' was favourably reviewed. Clifford studied at SOAS (University of London), Cambridge University and the University of Bradford. After research for the Home Office he worked in the police service for twenty five years. His current research includes 'policing gay and bisexual men 1950-2010'. He spoke at the LSE during LGBT History Month 2019 and is a regular visitor to the LSE archives.

The British Library of Political and Economic Science (LSE Library) was founded in 1896, a year after the London School of Economics and Political Science. It has been based in the Lionel Robbins Building since 1978 and houses many world class collections, including The Women's Library.
