This event has finished Took place on: Thursday, 23rd May 2019

 £4

The Wilbur & Niso Smith Foundation presents an evening with the authors shortlisted for this year’s Best Published Novel award.

Are you waiting to take off on your next adventure? Or do prefer to read about other people’s adventures from the comfort of your home? Join us to hear from the authors shortlisted for the 2019 Wilbur Smith Adventure Writing Prize.

Fiction allows adventure to take place in any world, at any time. Like real life, the key ingredient to any great adventure story is the feeling of being on a journey. Coupled with access to new cultures, characters overcoming insurmountable odds, and an exploration of new landscapes, adventure fiction lets you discover the world and learn about people and events in a thrilling way.

But have you ever wondered:

How does a writer research the far-flung places they write about? (Spoiler: a lot of them travel to these places too, tracing the footsteps of their characters).

Are the heroes in these novels are ever based on real adventurers?

Is it easier to write an adventure story set in the past, before GPS and mobile technology made the world a smaller place?

The Prize is administered by The Wilbur & Niso Smith Foundation, established by Wilbur Smith, the best-selling adventure writer, and his wife, Niso. Georgina Brown, Foundation Manager, will lead the discussion with the authors shortlisted for this year’s Best Published Novel to find out why these authors choose to write adventure and how they do it.

The shortlist for Best Published Novel will be announced one week prior to this event, on 15th May 2019, and the line-up for the panel will be disclosed then. Each of the shortlisted books will be available to purchase and the authors in attendance will be signing copies on the night.
