Three video works by three artists explore the currency of home and memory within contemporary art.
Shiraz Bayjoo’s Ile de France (2015) was shot on location in Mauritius. Originally an uninhabited island, its people can be traced back to Europe, Africa and South Asia brought together through the forces of colonialism.
Shiraz’s work in progress will be contextualized by the screening of early works by past Artsadmin artists’ bursary recipients Maria Khierkhah and Zineb Sedira.
Zineb’s Silent Sight (2000) recalls the artist’s return to Algeria as a child and the potent, yet troubling view of veiled women.
In Souvenir (2003), Maria Khierkhah travels to the ancient city of Yazd in Iran, walking in solitude to search for a sense of what ‘home’ is.
There will be a discussion and conversation with Shiraz and Zineb to further discuss the themes and the aesthetic lineage and context of the works.
