A chance to explore New Cross Gate Cutting nature reserve

New Cross Gate Cutting nature reserve sits next to a main railway line, so we can't leave it open, but when we are working on the site we can often allow visitors in.

Our Saturday 6th June our staff and volunteers will be busy on the reserve, so we won't be able to offer any organised walks, but it's a great opportunity to have a look around and see how spring is developing in the reserve.

The paths can be muddy and slippery, and parts of the footpath loop will be inaccessible due to repair work. Due to the wildlife value of the reserve, dogs are not allowed on the reserve, other than assistance dogs.

The railway cutting here is predominantly woodland. Small patches of neutral and acid grassland can also be found, alongside areas of reeds and tall herbs.

These habitats support over 170 species of flowering plants, several of which are locally rare.

The site contributes to one of the most important railway cuttings for wildlife in London, running between New Cross Gate and Forest Hill.
