What is The Picture of Dorian Gray about?
"I am tired of myself tonight. I should like to be somebody else."
In a tour de force performance, Sarah Snook (renowned for her role in Succession) embodies all 26 characters in her Olivier Award-nominated portrayal of Oscar Wilde's timeless classic. This innovative adaptation magnifies the essence of Wilde's cautionary tale through meticulously choreographed cameras and immersive live feed projections.
Harnessing the power of technology, screens, and selfie filters, the production illuminates the play's profound themes of vanity and envy. As Snook's characters navigate the pursuit of eternal youth and beauty, they manipulate their digital personas in real-time, sculpting and distorting their appearances until they become unrecognizable and grotesque.
The history of The Picture of Dorian Gray
Originally published in 1890, Wilde's novel follows the journey of Dorian Gray, a young man who strikes a Faustian bargain to preserve his youth and allure, while a portrait of him ages in his place. As Gray's decadent lifestyle spirals out of control, his actions leave an indelible mark on the cursed portrait, leading to a harrowing reckoning with the consequences of vanity and moral decay.
Despite facing controversy upon its release, Wilde's singular novel has since ascended to become a cornerstone of Gothic literature, revered for its haunting exploration of the human psyche and the perils of unchecked desire.
